Photos are available of the giant strawberry shortcake made each year for the Pasadena Strawberry Festival, but there's something unique about experiencing one in person, said Steve Andreno, second vice president of the festival's board of directors. Festival organizers have lined up 300 vendors, live entertainment, a carnival, helicopter rides, duck races, pig races, a cook-off, washer pitching contests, a high school mud volleyball tournament, a cooking tournament, a kickball tournament and mutton busting. In conjunction with this year's theme, "Stars, Stripes and Strawberries," and Armed Forces Day on May 19, military personnel with ID will be admitted for no charge throughout the festival. The children's area will host strawberry-eating contests, and the teen area will feature strawberry shortcake-eating competitions. In addition to scholarships, we work with 14 nonprofit organizations that work here and get a donation back from us, Muston said. Last year, the foundation awarded more than 25 scholarships, Andreno said. "Since 1996 we have given out $398,401 in scholarships," said Muston.
